Au Pair Unit Built from Scratch

I created an independent unit in a traditional Washington, DC, townhome. In only 450 square feet, this unit has a living area, kitchen, dining peninsula, bedroom with work area, and a bathroom with shower and laundry. By creatively incorporating them in the build-out of the rough space, I provided lots of closets, storage space, and other amenities. For example, dresser drawers and a printer cubby are built into the wall under the stairway to the upper level of the townhome.

Other smart touches include a compact dishwasher and slightly narrower refrigerator (the space is for only 1-2 people) and heated floors in the bathroom. A combination of recessed and sconce lighting expand the sense of space in a lower level.
